Press/Reviews/Feedback:

"Killer sonics on this one, and the thick beat is fantastic with its reverse hi-hats. If you’re into atmospheric electronic works or if you’re into more beat-driven electronics... you’re sure to enjoy this one. It’s got something to please both."
-- Review of "Cairn" on blocSonic [Details]

"On his new EP, The Ruby-Leif, Arden electronic composer William Fields lays out an experience containing the unpredictability, calm, danger, and comfort of an ocean. Each song is an individual experience within a larger one."
--Kathleen Hebblewaite, Out & About Magazine [Read Full Review]

"The Ruby-Leif" is subtlely majestic electronica performed by a virtual jazz combo – Warp should take notice.
--Tobias Fischer, Tokafi [Read Full Review]

The handful of songs present on this EP rely on a quiet storm of liquid bass grooves and synths with just a hint of reverb for maximum laid-back pleasure. [...] Fields puts on a really smooth show, and it's evident not one full listen through that he's done this before. [...] Fields has succeeded in releasing a free album that's worth more than that in both quality control and replay value."
--Patrick Masterson, Audiversity [Read Full Review]

First listening to this album I was quite astounded. Clearly melodic, clearly experimental, clearly beautiful but also abstract - I never thought a mix-up like this would work, but William made it work. A first-class audio experience!

Press/Reviews/Feedback:

Fields considers himself a composer, and this is what separates him from a myriad of individuals getting up close and personal with their software. Sounds appear to be consciously placed rather than slathered on haphazardly; they fibrillate, glide, pulse delicately or suddenly buzz brightly, a horde of sonic fireflies peppering the night air. [...] Contrasts abound throughout, categorical divides are bridged, clichés abandoned—take note of the sparkling chime-like notes that imbue "Seaglass," which are just plain beautiful, echoing out from burrs of runout groove noise, or the lush machine hums of "Hivernal" as they surge amongst the sampled fauna of an autumnal forest. Timbre is a worthwhile follow-up to his previous Branches, and in execution parts of it is leagues ahead of some better-known colleagues' work; I look forward to further Fields recordings with much interest.
--Darren Bergstein, e|i Magazine [Read Full Review]

Introspective, ambient and crystalline, William Fields has produced a unique sound that transcends its digital origins - emotive and compelling.
--Morpheus Music Review [Read Full Review]

An epic work of glitch genius from William Fields on the Gears of Sand label... With the release of "Timbre" by William Fields GofS have released what may be the standard for all other the label's releases to come, a powerful and emotive example of drone-y glitch based ambience that stands as some of the best work I've heard in the genre.
--Rik Maclean (Ping Things) [Read Full Review]

On 'Timbre'... he offers ten tracks that show a distinct love of ambient glitch music. How he does it, I don't know, but I suspect all the usual ingredients are there: field recordings, max processing, guitars, computer manipulation. All the usual references are there, from Fennesz to Stephan Mathieu, from Taylor Deupree to Sogar (or perhaps 85% of everything on 12K), which makes this nothing never heard before. Not that's of any relevance, since Fields does a fine job. Each of the tracks are produced well, show variation in approaching the sounds and is just a very nice, pleasant CD. Which is sometimes just as fine to hear.
--Vital Weekly 528

Manipulated sound is the keynote here, as Fields reconstructs his way to produce a series of tunes that are hypnotic yet edgy--in a decidedly tranquil fashion. Electronic textures flow like oil spills subjected to external guidance. Illbient tones coexist with ambient atmospherics. Shuddering points of hesitancy stumble into eruptions of stately disposition. Wobbling diodes stand elbow-to-elbow with looped string expressions. Sparkling bursts of heavenly radiance are grounded by crackly disruption, while noodled tones are spliced in, then fed back onto themselves, generating a choppy flow that pulsates of its own accord... This music has a tendency to lull, but it will periodically draw the listener from that sedation to bask in a brief instant of super-aware clarity.
--Sonic Curiousity

The tones and echoes on Arden electronic composer William Fields' Timbre play like a dream: shimmering and lucid, rising and falling, spurts and gaps cascading effortlessly over a wordless soundscape of human imagination.
--Out and About Magazine (Read Full Review)

Timbre is a deeply introspective, almost poetic music. At its core is something very, very personal, somber, even lonely but optimistic and playful. In other words: Serious candy for the ears!
--Ben Fleury-Steiner (label owner)

Well worthwhile for anyone who likes a little pop & crackle in their ambient.
--D (Hypnos Forum)

Completely brilliant and beautiful!!! Really fantastic! I'll be playing it plenty often...
--Michael Anton Parker

Timbre was selected by Chuck van Zyl for the Stars End Top 20 for June 2006.

Timbre was nominated for Best Ambient Album in the Morpheus Music Awards 2006.

Timbre was nominated for Best Recording in the O&A Music Awards 2006-2007.
