Ahhhh! It's alive! I'm back!
First there was a general lack of posting due to my wrist and house-buying activities. Then the server committed seppuku and the tech support people at our ISP were apparently on vacation. Thankfully, my site was spared. Big thanks to Nintariman for recovering everything!
Big things are in the works.
Audiopad is an interesting new interface for musical performance from those crazy kids at MIT.
Audiopad uses a series of electromagnetically tracked objects, called “pucks,” as input devices. The performer assigns each puck to a set of samples that he wishes to control. Audiopad determines the position and orientation of these objects on a tabletop surface and maps this data into musical cues such as volume and effects parameters. Graphical information is projected onto the tabletop surface from above, so that information corresponding to a particular physical object on the table appears directly on and around the object.
Recently my right wrist has been bothering me a bit, so I've tried to cut down on unnecessary mouse clicking as much as possible (read: surfing the web). It would be an awful thing to get carpal tunnel and not be able to use computers at all. That would mean no more job and no more music. We do so much with our hands.
I've even gone mouseless at work. It's completely unplugged. It's kind of slow going, especially surfing the web, but I'm getting used to it. I made a bunch of little scripts that execute common tasks. So, to access the BBC news site, all I need to do is type "bbc" at the command line. Or, to access the development server at work, "dev". I actually kind of like being able to do everything from the keyboard. Once you get used to it, it's quite fast.
Already my wrist is feeling better. Lets hope the pain goes away and stays away.
